High Gaitle Caravan Park, Longtown, Cumbria
High Gaitle is a peaceful rural caravan and camping site situated on the border of England and Scotland. Owned and run by the Fairclough family, the park has a welcoming, family-run atmosphere and benefits from their long-standing experience, with a sister park in Northumberland specialising in static caravans that has been in the family for over 35 years.
Located just one mile from the village of Longtown and three miles from Gretna Green, High Gaitle proudly holds the title of England’s last campsite before crossing the border. The six-acre site offers space for 30 tents, tourers, and motorhomes, with 14 electric hook-ups available—five on hard standing and the rest on grass pitches.
Facilities include toilets, showers, a disabled access bathroom, and a utility room for washing up. On-site manager Steven Fairclough lives at the park, providing guests with peace of mind and a friendly point of contact. The grounds are flat and framed by trees, with several mature trees within the park itself, including a striking monkey puzzle tree.
Families are warmly welcomed, and pets are well catered for with plenty of space to walk both on-site and nearby. Security is ensured with a locked entrance gate between 11pm and 7am, with access available by contacting the on-site manager.
The location is ideal for exploring, with sections of Hadrian’s Wall nearby, shopping at Gretna Gateway or Carlisle, and further afield, Keswick in the Lake District (40 minutes), Northumberland (30 minutes), and Glasgow (90 minutes).
High Gaitle welcomes groups by arrangement and is open all year round for motorhomes and touring caravans, with tents welcome from February to the end of November.
